As you probably know, refilling inkjet cartridges can be a very difficult and frustrating task. Many people try refilling inkjet printer cartridges only once before they give up on any future effort to do so simply because it is very difficult and complicated to do it right. But don’t give up on refilling ink cartridges entirely.  I say that because there is a new method for refilling them that has recently been developed.  It’s called the gravity method, and you’ll understand how it got that name once I describe the procedure to you. The proponents of this method claim that it makes refilling ink cartridges easy for everyone.

 

The common process of refilling ink cartridges required the purchase of a printer refill kit. These kits come with everything you need to refill your inkjet printer cartridges.  It includes the ink, a syringe, needles, latex gloves, and a set of instructions.  It is very import to follow all the instructions with these refill kits because any careless mistakes can end your chance at a successful refill.

 

The most important step in the refill process is using the syringe and needle to inject the ink into an empty inkjet cartridge. You must be extremely careful during this step because adding too much ink into the inkjet cartridge can create pressure and bubbles inside your inkjet cartridge.  This will almost certainly lead to problems such as spotty printing or even the unexpected immediate cessation of the functionality of your printer.

 

The gravity method is very similar to the regular method of refilling inkjet cartridges.  The main difference is in the process of transferring the ink into the cartridge.

 

In order to use the gravity method, you will need two syringes (For the sake of simplicity, I will refer to them as Syringe A and Syringe B). The first step is to remove the plunger from Syringe A.  The second step is to insert Syringe A into the chamber of the inkjet cartridge you wish to refill.  The third step requires you to inject the needle as far back as you can into the spongy area of the cartridge (Note: This is the one thing that most printer refill kit instruction guides advise you to never do). After you have injected the needle, then you must prop up the cartridge somewhere with Syringe A sticking out of it with its opening facing up. Once you have accomplished this, the fourth step is to load the proper amount of ink into Syringe B and then fill Syringe A’s cavity with ink.  The fifth step is to wait.  While you’re waiting, you can do whatever you please.  However, you will have to check the ink cartridge occasionally to monitor the progress. As time passes, you will see that our friend, gravity, has worked to pull the ink down from Syringe A into the inkjet cartridge.

 

Using the gravity method to refill your inkjet cartridges is actually much easier than I’ve explained it here. I encourage you to try it out see for yourself.  I’m confident that you will find that the gravity method makes refilling cartridges much easier than you remember it.

 One of the experiences regarding computer printers is thinking that buying an inkjet printer for only forty or fifty dollar is thinking that you’ve just gotten a great deal.  Even after you get the printer home and install it on your computer, you still think you’ve gotten a great deal.  After all, you can then print documents and graphs in color and in black and white.  You can even print photos. Life seems good for a month or two. Then, inevitably, one of the ink cartridges runs out of ink.  When you finally go to the store to buy a new cartridge, you suddenly discover that your previously great deal requires you to pay up to thirty dollars just for a black ink cartridge. At that point, you start to realize that if the color cartridge, which costs thirty five to forty dollars, is about to run out too, it would be most likely be less expensive to just buy a new printer! Aside from being wasteful and expensive, the whole experience is frustrating.

 Kodak is now poised to enter the inkjet printer market and correct this injustice.  When Kodak finally releases its line of inkjet printers in March, it might very well turn the whole inkjet printer and ink industry on its head because it will offer printers that will initially cost little more than the ink jet printers on the market today/ However, these new printers will be able to use inkjet cartridges which cost far less than the ones that competing manufacturers require in their printers.

 At this point, the majority of inkjet manufacturers like Canon, Epson, and Hewlett Packard have followed a specific business plan which makes little or no profit on the sale of their printers.  But after the initial sale of these inexpensive printers, these companies reap huge profits on the sale of the ink cartridges which are necessary to make these printers work. This actually makes a great deal of business sense.  After all, selling the printers at a huge discount can easily be looked upon as an investment if it ultimately prompts the owners of those printers buy the expensive cartridges over and over again when those subsequent purchases help to turn an enormous profit for the manufacturers.

One of the problems with this particular business model is that it not only gouges consumers and limits their freedoms; it also creates a certain amount of resentment with the customers. For example, it now typically costs around twenty nine cents to print a typical four by six inch photograph at home on an inkjet printer. When that cost is compared to the fact that you can have a photograph printed at a retail store for about nineteen cents, it’s obvious that people who print their photos at home are paying a great deal more just for the convenience of not having to go out to their local photo-equipped store to have their photos printed. This is nothing short of a serious problem for this business model if for no other reason than it’s an incentive for consumers to restrict their use of their own printers just to conserve ink.  At some point, this reaches a point where the ink isn’t really affordable at all. This fact, in turn, makes people extremely likely to abandon their inkjet printers in favor of buying another product that offers them a less expensive and less restrictive alternative.  And that is exactly what Kodak is counting on.

As a matter of fact, despite the additional cost of the new Kodak printers, Kodak expects that they will enable those very same home users to print those very same four by six inch photos for approximately ten cents per copy.  When you finally compute the savings in cost of ink over the course of a few hundred photographs, it’s not at all difficult to justify spending a little more on a more expensive printer!

Can We Do A Better Job Of Recycling?

 

Donating to a charity is something many people do on a regular basis. The tax laws in the United States even offer benefits to individuals and organization for donating to charity.  However, with the cost of living, it’s not easy to come up with extra money to donate to charity.

 

One great way to donate to charity without having to take money directly out of your own pocket is to recycle items you already have and maybe no longer use or no longer want.  That’s especially true if you might otherwise just discard those items.  A good example is used cartridges from your printer. Many places will accept and ultimately recycle inkjet cartridges for free or even give you a small discount on future cartridge purchases, but it’s just as easy to donate them to a charity.

 

Recycle 4 Charity is an organization based in California which will gladly accept your empty cartridges and donate the proceeds to a charity of your choice. Like many other organizations, R4C will provide you with pre-paid shipping materials.  Then you can send them as many cartridges as you wish. One option is to donate the cartridges so 10% of their gross profits will be donated to charities.  Or you can elect to receive money back which you can use for any purpose you choose, including donating it to a charity in your area.

 

Depending on the cartridge type, they will pay anywhere between $0.10 and $3.00 for each one, although most cartridges seem to fall somewhere between $0.20 to $0.45. At first glance, that might not seem like much money, but when your donations are matched by thousands of people, the donations add up to a significant amount of money.  Besides, if you were just going to throw the cartridges away, at least you’ll know that little bit of money is going to a good cause and helping someone in need in the process.  

 

Recycle 4 Charity can also provide a variety of boxes, baggies, and recycling containers which you can then set up in your school, your church, or your workplace as an incentive to get more people involved in recycling and donating their used printer cartridges

Companies like Staples also have programs which will donate the proceeds from the recycling of inkjet cartridges to certain charities. If you live in the United Kingdom, there are a number of organizations which will accept empty cartridges and then resell them to the original manufacturer with the proceeds from the sale going to charity. Homeless International, Recycling Appeal, and Action Aid Recycling are among the many organizations. In United States, there are similar programs such as freecycling.org that will donate 100% of the proceeds to a local organization of your choosing. They have a list of organizations in a number of states which will directly benefit when you recycle old inkjet cartridges.

Some printer manufacturers sell their inkjet printers at or below cost, hoping to make up the difference by making profits on the cartridges that you will have to buy to continue operating the printer. Some printers, like the HP DeskJet D2360 only costs $49.99 to buy, while a set of black and color cartridges sells for $29.99.  That’s actually 60% of the selling price of the printer itself! Consequently, many people look at ink jet refills as a way to save some money. By comparison, refill kits will cost $17.95 for a black cartridge and $22.95 for color cartridge. While it does seem more expensive, the black kit offers 25 refills, while color offers only 12 refills. Breaking it down to more understandable numbers, that’s a little less than $0.72 per black refill and $1.90 per color refill. That certainly beats the $29.99 price tag for original cartridges, doesn’t it?

If the cost for refilling cartridges is so low compared to buying new cartridges, why don’t more people do it? Actually there are several reasons why.  One of the most obvious reasons is because of the potential for making a mess in the process of refilling an ink cartridge. Refilling the cartridge requires a person to physically inject ink into the cartridge.  However, this is by no means a clean and predictable procedure because it can only be accomplished by using a syringe and a needle which must be inserted into a tiny hole in the cartridge. The fact is that you have no way of knowing when the cartridge is full.  So, it’s not uncommon for the ink to spill or spill over.  In addition, if something does go wrong, the cartridge may actually print badly or even not print at all. However, if you are adventurous,, and the refill kits for your particular printer aren’t very expensive (they can be as low in cost as $12.00 for a combination of cartridges, or $3.95 for just color),  refilling your used cartridges may be a way for you to save some of your hard-earned money.

Another reason that many people panicked regarding refilling used cartridges is the widespread belief that refilling the cartridge yourself, or using any non-original cartridges, would void the manufacturer’s warranty. Generally, that’s simply not the case.  According to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Improvement Act of 1975, a manufacturer cannot void the warranty solely because you use refilled cartridges. However, if a refilled cartridge spills inside your printer, the manufacturer is well within their rights to not honor the warranty agreement, and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it. That said, if everything goes well, you shouldn’t have any problems.  However, if the printer is, in fact, damaged as a result of you using a refilled cartridge, you will be responsible for any repair charges.  And because the printers are generally so inexpensive to begin with, it’s likely that the repair cost would be higher than the cost of just buying a new printer.

After learning all this, If you are still set on using ink jet refills, there are plenty of companies that would be willing to provide you with reasonably priced refills that will ultimately save you quite a bit of money. You will find instructions in the refill kit that will tell you exactly how to follow the procedure. There is one last bit of information you should know.  Once you refill, or attempt to refill, the cartridge, you may not be able to recycle it.  That may be an important consideration for some people.
